Colbert Report’s Best Apple Clips

Like the Colbert Report? Sure you do. Even if you don’t here are some funny bits regarding Apple courtesy of Comedy Central:

This week, Apple is expected to release a tablet computer, probably called the iSlate. Details are scarce, but from what I understand, it will be like a laptop only far less ergonomically optimized for masturbating to porn. Just as Moore’s Law predicted. But who am I to question Steve Jobs, a man who could easily have me bought and sold for twice the price, with a sleeker veneer and revolutionary user-interface. So, in celebration of the new computer I guess we’re all going to buy, here are the best Apple-related bits from The Colbert Report.

Here’s the first one after the jump:

Apple’s Desktops to Disappear Eventually?

Apple’s Desktops to Disappear Eventually?

The Appleblog offers up an interesting op-ed piece today regarding the future of desktop Macs as their portable, iPhone, iPod and soon to be tablet computers take a larger and larger share of the pie, literally.

The trend lines are no friend of the Mac desktop. For 2009, seven out of ten Macs sold were laptops, and in 2010 that ratio will likely rise to three out of four. While this may explain the single table of iMacs in the back of my local Apple Store, the question now becomes: is the Mac desktop doomed?

Steve Jobs once described Apple’s business model as an uncomfortable piece of furniture, a three-legged stool. What he was getting at is where the money comes from: Macs, iPods and the iTunes Store, and the iPhone.

Jobs: Tablet “Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done”

Jobs: Tablet “Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done”

Little Apple Tablet tidbit here from Crunchbase today:

“This will be the most important thing I’ve ever done” – Steve Jobs, referring to the soon-to-be-launched Apple Tablet.

We haven’t heard this first hand, but we’ve heard it multiple times second and third hand from completely independent sources. Senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited about the upcoming Apple Tablet as he’s ever been. Coming from the man who has created so much, that’s saying something.

If Steve Jobs thinks the iPhone was just a warm up act to this device, I can’t wait to see what it can do. As if our expectations weren’t already set high enough. We’ll all know a lot more this Wednesday.

Apple Gets Official with January 27th Event

Apple Gets Official with January 27th Event

Believe it or not, all of the reporting we’ve been doing about Apple’s January 27th press event in San Francisco to purportedly unveil the tablet device has been based on rumor. That’s changed today as Apple has now officially confirmed the event at the Yerba Buena center to “come see our latest creation.” As first reported by Apple Insider’s tablet invitation, it looks like this:

New Patent Points to Stylus for Tablet

New Patent Points to Stylus for Tablet

MacRumors points out a new patent recently filed by Apple regarding the use of a stylus for input on a touch screen.

Given Steve Jobs’ distaste for styluses, it comes as a surprise that Apple has recently applied for a patent application exploring the use of a stylus for the capacitive touch sensors found on the iPhone. Unlike the recently revived Newton patent, this new patent was actually filed with today’s technology in mind.

We had our an engineer friend look this over and it’s kind of an interesting peek into what might be a feature of the upcoming Apple Tablet. What this patent essentially covers is the use of a special stylus tip that would permit highly accurate input on a screen primarily designed for touch use.

It’s the Value Added Content – Stupid

It’s the Value Added Content – Stupid

The AP via MacNewsWorld ponders the viability of the Apple tablet. They point out a lot of the previous attempts to bring a tablet to market have failed, most notably:

Bill Gates, cofounder of Apple nemesis Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), predicted repeatedly during the 2000s that tablets were about to take off. He was wrong because those tablets required people to use a pen-shaped stylus to tap buttons or write on the screen, which was attractive in workplaces where employees needed to check boxes or fill out forms. For most people, though, using a stylus for regular computer tasks such as editing a spreadsheet was more cumbersome than using a mouse and keyboard.
