Apple’s Desktops to Disappear Eventually?

The Appleblog offers up an interesting op-ed piece today regarding the future of desktop Macs as their portable, iPhone, iPod and soon to be tablet computers take a larger and larger share of the pie, literally.

The trend lines are no friend of the Mac desktop. For 2009, seven out of ten Macs sold were laptops, and in 2010 that ratio will likely rise to three out of four. While this may explain the single table of iMacs in the back of my local Apple Store, the question now becomes: is the Mac desktop doomed?

Steve Jobs once described Apple’s business model as an uncomfortable piece of furniture, a three-legged stool. What he was getting at is where the money comes from: Macs, iPods and the iTunes Store, and the iPhone.

TUAW- iPhone with Touch-Sensitive Case on the way

TUAW’s Mike Schraam put out a story today with some great links regarding the rumored iPhone 4G model that’s sure to be on the way once the dust from all this tablet stuff settles.

Bloomberg is the latest outlet to come up with some rumors about the possible new iPhone model coming this year (the iPhone, not the tablet, although doesn’t it seem like the flood of tablet rumors has encouraged all kinds of Apple speculation lately?). They say that the new handset will include a 5 megapixel camera to match Google’s Nexus One, and will also include a touch-sensitive casing, working similarly to the Magic Mouse. That one just seems strange — what would you gesture on the back of the iPhone while you’re using it?

Apple’s tablet is expected to help resuscitate the publishing world by offering downloadable e-book versions of popular printed magazines, periodicals and newspapers through the iTunes Store. Perhaps this doesn’t seem all that exciting to the average American, but it could be a boon to travelers and ex-pats living abroad.

Apple’s upcoming tablet has been often pitched as an ebook reader, which has led some analysts to speculate whether the device will feature an e-ink display like the Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook. Others think it will use the same LCD technology the iPhone and iPod Touch employ. Or perhaps it will feature an OLED screen like the Microsoft Zune HD and Google Nexus One. Speculation has been fueled by rumors that developers cannot get supplies due to Apple’s cornering of the market for 10.1-inch LCD and OLED displays in Asia. Whatever display technology Apple chooses will make a massive difference to the tablet’s success. Let’s take a look at the various display possibilities.

Reuters has an unsourced story purporting to be from Taiwanese suppliers who claim to be involved in shipping components for Apple’s inevitable tablet. This is of particular interest:
