Fans of the show know that CTU members often sport Apple MacBook Pros, Cinema Displays and iPhones courtesy of a product placement deal with Apple. And this is as close to tacit confirmation on existence and name of Apple’s tablet as we’ve heard so far. Then again perhaps this is just an evil plot by the Russians and Chloe will have to find the IP of those responsible. But one way or the other, it looks like Apple’s ‘newest creation’ may find its way into Jack’s hands before this season is out….

Techcrunch is running a report that the tablet will come with Barnes and Noble as its default bookstore. I’m not sure if I buy this though- would Apple really want a middle man between customers and books?
Read More...We believe there is a good chance there will be a Barnes & Noble bookstore built into the Apple Tablet, either as one of the showcase apps which launches with the device, powering a new book section in iTunes, or integrated directly into the Tablet’s e-reader. The two companies are thought to be working closely together, increasing the likelihood that Barnes & Noble will be part of the announcement on Wednesday. While Apple can run around cutting deals with the larger publishers, a built-in Barnes & Noble bookstore could include up to a million titles in one fell swoop, just like on B&N’s own Nook reader. Barnes & Noble already offers an eReader app for the iPhone (iTunes link) which lets you download and read electronic books on the smaller device. That app could be paving the way for an eReader or book store on the Tablet.

This week, Apple is expected to release a tablet computer, probably called the iSlate. Details are scarce, but from what I understand, it will be like a laptop only far less ergonomically optimized for masturbating to porn. Just as Moore’s Law predicted. But who am I to question Steve Jobs, a man who could easily have me bought and sold for twice the price, with a sleeker veneer and revolutionary user-interface. Evidence Points to Tablets Now Being Tested Online By Apple
More in from the folks at Techcrunch. Potentially conclusive evidence that the tablet exists- testing hits of iPhone apps by a device and OS from Cupertino that does not match any existing iPhone or iPhone OS!
Flurry, a mobile app analytics company, has noticed approximately 50 devices in the Cupertino that match the characteristics of Apple’s tablet device. Flurry claims to have reliably placed these devices on Apple’s Cupertino campus, and are confident that they are “observing a group of pre-release tablets in testing.”
This make sense – as the Apple Tablet has to be tested before it is announced this Wednesday, January 27 in San Francisco. Furthermore, Flurry has been an extremely reliable source on analytics data thus far and don’t often break stories unless they are sure they’ve checked their facts.
They’ve noticed that a large number of the apps downloaded were Games (140 total downloads or launches) and the next group was Entertainment, followed by News and Books. Here’s a chart of the usage data:

Senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited about the upcoming Apple Tablet as he’s ever been. Coming from the man who has created so much, that’s saying something.
If Steve Jobs thinks the iPhone was just a warm up act to this device, I can’t wait to see what it can do. As if our expectations weren’t already set high enough. We’ll all know a lot more this Wednesday.

More Evidence Apple Tablet May Be Called iPad

The Jesus Tablet was first was first to report that Apple had filed for an extension to oppose the Fujitsu trademark for “iPad”. We now have discovered that Apple may be moving ahead anyway.
IP Application Development LLC, a company that has filed patents internationally for the “iPad” mark, has now filed an application to trademark “iPad” in the United States as well. The application is dated January 16, and appears to have been posted to the US Patent and Trademark Office website today.
The application was filed under Filing Basis 1(b) and 44(d). According to the USPTO website, Filing Basis 1(b) refers to the “bona fide intention to use a mark in commerce” and 44(b) refers to the “claim of priority, based on an earlier-filed foreign application.” Looks like last week’s international filings were not only geared toward protecting the mark abroad, but were aimed at giving their U.S. filing a boost under 44(b).

Engadget and Daring Fireball point out the Amazon’s recently announced app active content store is going to make it nearly impossible for developers to add any sort of internet connectivity without incurring hefty download fees. So let’s see, 16 shades of gray, limited motion and no connectivity. Fuuuun.
We were wondering how Kindle’s impending active content (read: apps) would be harnessing that free Whispernet bandwidth. As it turns out, there’s just a smidgen allowed for gratis. According to the terms laid out by Amazon, there’s a 70 / 30 revenue split, with that smaller percentage going to Bezos and co. “net of delivery fees of $0.15 / MB.” The price tiers is a little simpler: apps can be free if their download over 3G is less than 1MB and they use less than 100KB per month, per user.

Some new reports from Gadgetcrave and Fox News on the all-important carrier deals being worked on by Apple for its iPad/iSlate/tablet computer.
It’s Friday, January 22 and in this young year of 2010 that can mean only one thing: we’re going to have to end off the week with one more Apple tablet rumor. Sorry. The tablet is likely to be carried by AT&T. No surprise there, since that’s where the iPhone’s been [stuck] all along. The second part of the report is where it gets somewhat interesting: Fox states that Verizon may also be carrying the tablet. The report cites sources at both Verizon and AT&T as confirming that they’ll split the duty of covering the tablet. It then goes on to clarify that both companies are currently in discussions with Apple and that a final deal has not been negotiated with either.
So will it be Verizon? AT&T? Or both? A lot of frustrated iPhone users would likely welcome a switch to a new carrier, since there are a host of complaints about AT&T’s coverage and handling of the phone (tethering, anyone?) The AT&T part isn’t surprising, given early reports that the tablet would rely on HSDPA, a feature used by AT&T that, according to company spokesman Mark Siegal, “effectively doubles the speed of our 3G network.” Besides, AT&T is already a high-profile partner of Apple, as the carrier of choice for the iPhone.

The Apple Blog has this nice analysis of Amazon’s recent changes to its royalty policy and some other moves they’ve been making in the impending buildup to Apple’s iPad. Will it be enough or has the ship already sailed?
I have heard it said, “If you can’t compete, sue.” Of course, I’m sure that’s not the case with Nokia’s recent complaint against Apple. Sure, it could have started litigation back in 2007 when the iPhone was first launched, but I guess the almost-three-year-delay was just how long it took getting its lawyers to agree on the wording. Or the letterhead. Or something.
Amazon, on the other hand, is doing the exact opposite and choosing to Compete with a capital C. This week it has floated a boat-load of announcements around its Kindle e-book reader device and platform. Now, stop being cynical, I’m sure the timing has nothing to do with the imminent unveiling of Apple’s mythical Tablet.

You can shop for books online using your Amazon.com account, purchase, download and read all in this clever little application.
Kindle for iPhone is a very light download so you’ll be up and running in no time, you just need to enter your Amazon.com account details. Then you are taken into a Safari browser session to pick out books. Couple of nice features, you can download decent sized free samples of any book you’re interested in and if you have a Kindle it will automatically sync up so you have one copy on the Kindle and one for the iPhone. I chose a cookbook about making Japanese food.
